After completing ROTC at Georgetown University while attending George Washington University (which had no ROTC) I was sent to Ft Knox for Armor Officer's Basic as a 90-day wonder headed to the reserves. While there, the Army decided to change the very complicated process to go from Reserve Duty to Active Duty. Not knowing how it would work, for the rest of the FY it was if you want to go on Active Duty rather than Reserve Duty Raise your hand. I did, and said I wanted to go to Germany, for which I was told that would be 3 years rather than 2 years. I went.
I was stationed in Schweinfurt for 3½ years where I was in 3/64 Armor where I was the Mortar Platoon Leader, then a Tank Platoon Leader and finally the HHC XO. Then back to Ft Knox for the Armored Officer's Advanced Course.
I got orders for Ft Hood, called my Branch officer and asked "Anywhere in the world by Ft Hood? To which he replied: "Shut up Captain, you got your second choice.
At Ft Hood, I spent a year in First Cav, then wanting to go to the local Junior College to take computer classes in the evening, I got the job as the Army Emergency Relief (AER) Officer for Ft Hood. With no field duty, I was able to complete an Associates Degree in Computer Science.
One of my classmates was the deputy director of the computer center for Ft Hood who had 0-3 slots at the time. I called branch to see if I could get an extension to do that and was told, "We don't need no stinking tankers doing computers, you're got back to Fort Knox. I replied, "Tanks for the memories, I resign".
